A free blog with ads, or a free blog on your domain
WordPress.com and the Rankwise blog both let you publish for free. They give you very different things for that price.
A free WordPress.com site is a whole website on a wordpress.com address. It comes with themes and the WordPress editor. The WordPress.com pricing page says free sites display WordPress.com ads to visitors and have no custom domain. The Personal plan removes the ads and adds a custom domain, at $4 a month billed yearly or $9 billed monthly.
The Rankwise blog is a blog for the site you already have. It shows no ads. It can live at yourdomain.com/blog on the free blog terms, with one small "Published with Rankwise" line in the footer. Every post comes with a sitemap entry, structured data, an llms.txt line and a Markdown copy.

What the free tier gives you
A free WordPress.com site lives at yoursite.wordpress.com. It shows WordPress.com ads, and it cannot install plugins. The pricing page lists these three things as what a paid plan adds: a custom domain, plugin installation and no ads for visitors.
A free Rankwise blog lives at yourname.rankwiseblog.com, or on your own domain at a path like /blog. It shows no ads. The limit is 10,000 visits a month per blog. If a blog goes over that limit two months in a row, new posts pause until you pick a plan, and the blog stays online.
Subfolder or subdomain
WordPress.com support says you cannot create a subdirectory, like yourgroovysite.com/blog, that displays a separate WordPress.com site. Its advice is to use a subdomain such as blog.yourgroovysite.com, which needs a Personal plan or higher.
The Rankwise blog works the other way. You keep your main site where it is. You paste one snippet into a Cloudflare Worker, Next.js middleware on Vercel, or Nginx. The snippet forwards only /blog to Rankwise, and readers and search engines see your address. If you prefer a subdomain like blog.yourdomain.com, the same kind of snippet serves the whole host, still for free.
Plugins and SEO setup
On WordPress.com, plugins come with every paid plan. You can add an SEO plugin for extra features, and you keep it up to date.
The Rankwise blog has no plugins because it needs none. Each post ships with:
- A sitemap entry and an RSS item.
- Article and FAQ structured data, and a canonical URL.
- A line in llms.txt and a Markdown copy at the post address plus .md.
- Plain HTML with no JavaScript, so any crawler reads the full text.
When WordPress.com is the better pick
WordPress.com is a full site builder. If you need pages, a theme you can change or a plugin for a special feature, it does far more than the Rankwise blog. The Rankwise blog does one job. It gives a business site a fast blog that search engines and AI assistants can read, and Rankwise can write the posts for you on a paid plan.
